Why Are Lab-Grown Diamonds the Future?
These days, with all of the controversy surrounding the traditional gem mining industry, like ecological and ethical concerns, many are turning toward lab-grown diamonds as a way to pave the future of the industry. This is because they’re sustainable and cause minimal negative environmental and socio-economic impact.
As one of today’s leading manufacturers of sustainable jewelry with lab-grown diamonds and recycled gold, näas Jewelry wanted to talk a bit about this sea change in the jewelry industry here.
Why Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Becoming the Industry Standard?
There are a number of reasons why many jewelry manufacturers are moving toward lab-grown diamonds, such as:
- They’re sustainable: Lab-grown diamonds have much less impact upon the environment than traditionally mined gems. There’s no excessive drilling or harmful practices to the planet, nor deforestation that causes soil erosion.
- They’re Conflict-Free: With lab-grown diamonds, there are no unethical practices that destroy native communities, nor forced labor and other conditions that are both unethical, and harmful to native communities.
- They’re More Efficient: Creating a lab-grown diamond can be done much more efficiently and at much less of a cost than traditional gem mining practices. They can also be easily customized to create different vibrant colors.
- They’re Nearly Identical: Recently, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) ruled that a lab-grown diamond is just as genuine as one that’s been traditionally mined. This means that a gemstone, whether it’s organic or not, is officially recognized as such.
How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?
There are two different methods to making lab-grown diamonds, the first being the High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT) method that mimics how they’re formed naturally. Technicians use this method to create a diamond seed that eventually is grown into a larger diamond. The second method uses a process somewhat reminiscent of 3-D printing in which a diamond seed created by the method above is used and carbon is layered over it along with highly-pressurized gasses to create a diamond; this method is known as the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method.
